I want to get back to basics and let the gospel infuse every part of me, my ministry and preaching. I'm increasingly convinced the gospel is three things, here they are with what I think is a representative verse and how I'd use that aspect of the Gospel as an Old Testament and four-Gospel lens.
Gospel as an announcement of Good news
Gospel as a story about Jesus
Gospel as personal salvation for us
Gospel as an announcement of Good news
- "Day after day, in the temple courts and from house to house, they never stopped teaching and proclaiming the good news that Jesus is the Messiah." (Acts 5:42)
- Old Testament & Gospel: Jesus as Prophet, Preist and King, the Messiah and Son of God.
Gospel as a story about Jesus
- "the gospel he promised beforehand through his prophets in the Holy Scriptures regarding his Son, who as to his human nature was a descendant of David, and who through the Spirit of Holiness was declared with power to be the Son of God by his resurrection from the dead: Jesus Christ our Lord." (Rom 1:2-4)
- Old Testament & Gospel: The unfolding historical promises and their fulfilment
Gospel as personal salvation for us
- "That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord”, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved. As the Scripture says, “Anyone who trusts in him will never be put to shame.” (Rom 10:9-11)
- Old Testament & Gospel: Judgement and Mercy, the repentance and belief of Biblical characters
